Bitcoin Volatility Aligns with US Trading Hours
The cryptocurrency market is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by institutionalization and the growth of regulated futures products. According to Woofun AI research, peak Bitcoin volatility has synchronized with U.S. trading hours, while weekend activity has declined significantly. This shift implies that independent trading activities in Asian or European markets can no longer solely explain global price fluctuations.
The study found that between 2022 and 2025, the period of highest Bitcoin volatility shifted from 14:00 UTC to 15:00 UTC, aligning with adjustments to U.S. trading sessions. The volatility-weighted center of the U.S. trading session also shifted backward by 0.33 hours, a change that is statistically significant.
The research also highlights the suppressive effect of U.S. market closures on crypto volatility. On weekdays corresponding to U.S. market holidays, Bitcoin's share of volatility during U.S. trading hours dropped by 13.9 percentage points compared to normal trading days.
Crypto assets such as Bitcoin, ETH, XRP, and Solana no longer follow the decentralized, round-the-clock random distribution; instead, they closely align with Wall Street's traditional trading schedule. This phenomenon marks the evolution of crypto assets from marginal speculative instruments into mainstream financial assets.
