Bitcoin Wallet Shows 15-Year Gain of Over 462,000%
A significant move has been observed in the Bitcoin blockchain after 15 years of dormancy. An address holding approximately 8.54 BTC, which was received on June 13, 2011, when Bitcoin traded at around $14, has moved its entire balance in a single transaction. The transfer, valued at roughly $538,000, represents an estimated 461,981% gain if sold.
The address in question began with the prefix '1Emi' and had not shown any activity since receiving the coins in 2011. Galaxy Research reported on this development, noting that Bitcoin's early years saw relatively few addresses that can still move funds today due to lost private keys or abandoned wallets. The transfer has sparked attention as it is considered a rare occurrence.
It is essential to note that analysts cannot determine the purpose of this transaction with certainty. The Coin Days Destroyed metric, which tracks the age accumulated by coins while they remain unmoved, cannot distinguish between selling, custody changes, or other purposes. This highlights the complexity of interpreting dormant-wallet activity and its implications for market movements.
