Bitcoin Warns of Quantum Threat: 'Canary in the Coal Mine' Alerted

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies may be the first to face the practical threat of quantum computing when the technology learns to crack complex encryption mechanisms, according to Quantum Xchange CEO Eddie Zervigon. He warns that cryptocurrencies are like a 'canary in the coal mine,' indicating a potential problem for traditional finance as well.

Zervigon notes that blockchain protocols will likely be attacked first due to their decentralized nature. This would signal the emergence of a cryptographically significant quantum computer, capable of breaking the elliptic curve cryptography that underpins Bitcoin's signatures and banking infrastructure encryption.

Google researchers have reduced the estimated quantum power needed to break Bitcoin, making it possible with less than 500,000 physical qubits - 20 times fewer than previous estimates. The U.S. government is also working on a powerful quantum computer within three years, which would create a sense of urgency for companies and governments to transition to post-quantum cryptography.

The slow decision-making system in blockchain may be its main vulnerability in the context of quantum computers. Unlike traditional finance institutions like JPMorgan, which can update their cryptographic infrastructure quickly, Bitcoin's governance structure makes it harder to implement changes.
