Bitcoin Whales Accumulate Over $9.6 Billion in BTC Since July 15
Bitcoin whales have been accumulating massive amounts of BTC since July 15, adding 113,950 to their total holdings. This influx is valued at around $9.6 billion at current prices. The analytics firm Santiment tracks these significant holders and notes that they are often seen as indicators of where smart money, well-funded and experienced investors, is moving in the crypto space.
The group of wallets holding 100 to 1,000 BTC has increased its holdings by 2.2% since mid-July, totaling about 5.2 million BTC valued at around $440 billion. This group has a solid track record, generally tracking Bitcoin's price movements more accurately than any other wallet tier over the past five years.
However, it's worth noting that this data mixes individual investors with exchanges and custodians, which can artificially inflate the balance without any new purchases occurring. Spot Bitcoin ETFs provide clearer insight into institutional investments, as fund issuers report their inflows daily. These funds experienced massive inflows of $999 million on September 21 and $715 million on September 22, totaling around $1.7 billion in just two days.
To confirm institutional involvement, sustained ETF inflows and Bitcoin closing above $87,400 would be necessary. If these funds can maintain inflows in the hundreds of millions each day and Bitcoin closes above its September 22 high near $87,400-3.6% above the current price, the case for institutional involvement strengthens.
