Bitcoin Whales Shift Strategy After Three-Month Deposit Streak Ends
Bitcoin whales have ended a three-month streak of net deposits to exchanges, marking a significant shift in behavior. According to Glassnode data from October 5, these large holders sent more Bitcoin to exchanges than they withdrew throughout the summer. This net deposit period lasted longer than any other in 2023, at least twice as long as previous instances.
The trend reversed in late August, with net flows turning negative. Since then, whales have withdrawn more Bitcoin from exchanges than they deposited. This change in direction has persisted, indicating a shift in how whales are managing their holdings.
Glassnode’s chart tracks these flows using a 30-day average, measured in thousands of BTC per day. The latest data shows a green area below the zero line, representing net withdrawals. This suggests that outflows from exchanges have dominated recently.
The indicator measures transfers between exchanges and wallets, not direct purchases or sales. The shift provides insight into how whales are positioning their Bitcoin holdings, though it does not indicate actual trading activity.
