Bitcoin's $8.7B Yield Market Leaves 99% of Supply Untapped
The majority of Bitcoin remains idle in the cryptocurrency market, despite its growing decentralized finance (DeFi) economy. A joint report from Yield Basis and Valueverse found that only 104,105 BTC, worth about $8.7 billion, is currently deployed in productive onchain strategies.
This represents just under 0.52% of the circulating Bitcoin supply, leaving the vast majority outside the growing Bitcoin DeFi economy. Lending dominates the current BTCFi market at 81%, while staking and restaking make up another 12%. Liquidity strategies remain much smaller, with conventional liquidity provision representing about 5.5% of productive BTC.
The key test now is whether BTCFi can persuade long-term holders to put more Bitcoin to work. Valueverse estimates the productive Bitcoin market could grow to around 270,000 BTC by 2030 under a base-case scenario, with a more bullish case putting the figure near 470,000 BTC.
