Bitcoin's $87K Breakout Triggers Two-Year High FOMO and Cautionary Signals
Bitcoin's price surge past $87,300 has sent market psychology sharply into bullish territory, driven by a combination of a major short squeeze and a surge in social volume.
According to Santiment, crowd commentary around Bitcoin reached its highest concentration of positive language since December 2024, with bullish keywords such as 'higher', 'bullish', and 'above' overwhelming bearish sentiment on social channels.
The sudden upward momentum was amplified by heavy liquidations in the derivatives market, with roughly $648 million in short positions wiped out over a 24-hour period. This forced buying coincided with a 39% jump in total crypto trading volume, accelerating price gains and encouraging further FOMO among both retail and institutional participants.
The shift suggests traders are adding fresh leverage rather than de-risking, highlighting a clear pattern: an initial short squeeze sparked higher trading volume, which ultimately drew leveraged traders back in to chase the rally. However, historical patterns signal caution, as extreme social consensus tends to act as a contrarian indicator.
