Bitcoin's Bear-Market Recovery Hinges on $82,470 Reclaim
Galaxy Research has identified a key technical level that could confirm whether Bitcoin's recent recovery is a lasting trend or just another bear-market rally. The level in question is the 50-week moving average, currently trading near $82,470.
According to Galaxy's study of completed Bitcoin bear markets since 2011, reclaiming this average has been a crucial indicator of a durable recovery. In six previous cycles, Bitcoin reclaimed its 50-week moving average 13 times, and 11 of those moves held without setting a lower closing low.
The researchers found that the 50-day moving average provides quicker signals but with more false starts. In fact, across the six completed bear markets, 43 out of 106 reclaims of the 50-day average failed.
Galaxy notes that reclaiming the 50-week average does not necessarily prove a bottom, citing the example of Bitcoin's 2021-2022 double-top cycle, where the price fell to $15,758 after initially rebounding above the level in December 2021 and March 2022.
The study concludes that while reclaiming the 50-week average is a positive sign, it requires patience. In three longer bear markets, the first successful 50-week reclaim arrived between 130 and 284 days after the low, with Bitcoin having already rallied between 63% and 80% by then.
Galaxy Research suggests that until Bitcoin closes above $82,470, the recovery remains unconfirmed. The recent rally has been encouraging, but history says a stronger confirmation is needed to validate the June low as a true bottom.
