Bitcoin's Breakout Hangs in Balance as $82,500 Level Becomes Crucial
The crypto market is bracing for a potential shift in momentum as Bitcoin's recent breakout above its 50-week moving average hangs in the balance. Analysts at institutional market maker Wintermute warn that the fate of XRP and altcoins may be decided by whether Bitcoin can hold its ground at $82,500.
The level is crucial because it marks the former upper boundary of a prolonged trading range, and a close above it would confirm a significant bullish signal. However, if Bitcoin fails to hold this level, it could lead to a correction in the altcoin market, which has been driven by retail investors' optimism.
Wintermute notes that large players are already positioning themselves for further gains in Bitcoin, with some replacing short-term hedges with longer-dated call options targeting $126,000 by year-end. Meanwhile, the firm's OTC desk is seeing an imbalance between buyers and sellers, with retail investors selling Bitcoin to move profits into alternative tokens like XRP and Ethereum.
The analysts caution that an altcoin-led rise without support from BTC is risky for buyers, citing historical data that shows a bounce led by alts without confirmation from Bitcoin has historically resolved flat or negative. They expect attention to return to the largest cryptocurrencies, with Bitcoin needing to push higher to reset the alt cycle and recycle new wealth into it.
