Bitcoin's Coinbase Premium Index Hits Record Negative Streak Amid Shift to TradFi Perps
Bitcoin's Coinbase Premium Index has been in negative territory for 76 consecutive days since May 19, marking its longest streak on record. The index, which tracks the difference between the price of Bitcoin (BTC) on Coinbase and the global average, is considered a barometer of US institutional demand.
A negative reading indicates that Bitcoin was trading at a discount on Coinbase compared to other major exchanges, suggesting that US investors were not purchasing as much. Historically, the index has been in negative territory for around 30 days during the October 2024 market crash and 40 consecutive days between January 16 and February 24 of this year.
The current streak was nearly double the previous record, with a reading of -0.1012% on June 23. This trend is reflected in spot Bitcoin ETFs, which saw net outflows of $265.37 million on Friday and $61.53 million for the week, according to SoSoValue data.
Meanwhile, crypto exchanges are seeing explosive growth in perpetual futures tied to traditional financial assets. In the first five months of 2026, they processed $1.32 trillion in stock, index, and commodity perpetuals, more than 12 times the $104.21 billion for all of 2025.
