Bitcoin's Correlation with Gold Surges Above 50% Amid Debts and Deficits
Grayscale's research note on August 27 revealed that Bitcoin's correlation with gold has risen above 50% this year, while its correlation with the Nasdaq 100 has fallen from over 60% to roughly 33%. This shift is being referred to as the return of the 'debasement trade' by Grayscale.
The 'debasement trade' suggests that hard assets appreciate as fiat currencies lose purchasing power. Bitcoin's correlation with gold is at its highest level in years, and Grayscale sees this as evidence that investors are treating it as a scarce monetary asset rather than a leveraged bet on technology equities.
Grayscale's Head of Research, Zach Pandl, notes that the numbers are backward-looking, drawn from a rolling 90-day window. However, he argues that this shift may be indicative of a broader re-rating of the asset this year.
