Bitcoin's Dark Web: How a Global Internet Outage Could Impact Transactions
Bitcoin's decentralized nature is often touted as a strength, but it may not be enough to withstand a global internet outage. According to analysts, a worldwide connectivity failure could severely disrupt Bitcoin transactions and temporarily fragment network activity.
The blockchain is replicated across thousands of independent nodes, rather than stored on a central server. This means that existing balances and historical transactions would remain intact even if the internet went down.
However, communication between nodes would be greatly impaired, making it difficult to propagate transactions or maintain a synchronized global view of new blocks. Miners could continue producing blocks locally, but this could lead to competing versions of the blockchain.
Once connectivity is restored, Bitcoin's consensus rules would determine which valid chain had the most accumulated proof-of-work, potentially reorganizing transactions contained only in competing branches.
