Bitcoin's Decade-Old Wallets Stir, Moving $161 Million in Two Weeks
Bitcoin's decade-old wallets are stirring again, and this time they're moving massive amounts of cash. Over the past two weeks, four long-dormant Bitcoin wallets have transferred a combined 1,971.03 BTC (~$161 million) to other accounts.
The largest transfer came from a wallet that had been untouched since July 2016 and contained 1,260.78 BTC worth approximately $100.63 million. This stash could have delivered a gain of roughly 12,122% on a cost basis near $652 per coin.
Even more astonishing are the gains posted by some of the oldest coins. A wallet dormant since March 2011 holding 10.25 BTC is now worth about $792,000, a staggering increase of over 8.38 million percent from an average cost around $1. Another 100 BTC, untouched since November 2011 and worth about $8.09 million, was up roughly 2.49 million percent.
The most recent transfer occurred early Tuesday, with 600 BTC (~$51.9 million) moving from a wallet that had been dormant since July 2012. This could have yielded a gain of more than 1 million percent.
