Bitcoin's Final Unlock: Collateral Treatment by Banks
Financial expert Dave Weisberger believes that Bitcoin's biggest remaining unlock is collateral treatment by banks. According to Weisberger, banks currently apply a haircut close to 100% on Bitcoin, making it difficult for lenders and companies like Strategy Inc (formerly MicroStrategy) to use it as collateral.
Weisberger notes that the Basel committee and rulemakers have all described treating Bitcoin like other assets based on volatility and liquidity as inevitable, but it has yet to happen. This change would open up new opportunities for lending, corporate treasury use, and DeFi integration.
Additionally, Weisberger highlights tokenization, Hyperliquid, ETF-driven volatility reduction, and systemic effects such as every 25 basis points in rates translating to about $100 billion. He frames these regulatory and market plumbing changes as the catalyst for broader crypto adoption and capital inflows.
