Bitcoin's Global Internet Outage Conundrum
Bitcoin's decentralization is often touted as its strongest feature, but a global internet outage could severely disrupt transactions and temporarily fragment network activity. While it would not erase the blockchain, communication requirements are essential for the network to function.
The Bitcoin network relies on thousands of independent nodes to replicate and verify transactions. During an internet outage, these nodes would be unable to communicate reliably, making transaction propagation and block synchronization a challenge.
Bitcoin miners, who need information about the latest valid block to efficiently extend the chain, could potentially continue producing blocks locally, creating competing versions of the blockchain.
However, when communication returns, Bitcoin's consensus rules would determine which valid chain had the most accumulated proof-of-work. Transactions on losing branches could be reorganized, causing settlement uncertainty and making users wary of treating transactions as final during severe network fragmentation.
