Bitcoin's Grip on Crypto Market Weakens Amid Signs of Altcoin Season
The dominance of Bitcoin in the crypto market has been declining over the past five years. Historically, the 'Bitcoin Dominance' metric, which represents the percentage of the total crypto market value that Bitcoin accounts for, has ranged between 40% and 65%. Currently, this metric is sitting at around 60%, but if it dips below 60% for a sustained period, it could signal the arrival of 'altcoin season.'
During altcoin season, smaller market cap altcoins far outpace the performance of Bitcoin, leading to outsized returns for investors. The top performers over the past 90 days include Zcash, Uniswap, and Arbitrum, all of which are up 200% or more.
The 'Altcoin Season Index' from CoinMarketCap looks at the performance of the top 100 cryptocurrencies and asks how many have outperformed Bitcoin. Currently, this index is at 50, meaning roughly half of all cryptos are now outpacing Bitcoin.
While some investors may be eager to jump into altcoins, it's essential to consider multiple indicators before making investment decisions. The 'Bitcoin Dominance' metric by itself does not guarantee the onset of altcoin season.
