Bitcoin's Hidden Credit Market Poised to Hit $1 Trillion
A hidden credit market worth $1 trillion is emerging within the Bitcoin (BTC) ecosystem, and it's being driven by surging borrower demand and institutional infrastructure. According to new research from digital-asset lender Ledn, bitcoin-backed loans could reach this threshold within a decade.
The drivers behind this growth are the increasing number of long-term BTC holders who prefer to borrow against their position rather than sell it due to tax implications. This trend mirrors the development of mortgage markets, where homeowners unlock liquidity from appreciating assets without triggering taxable sales.
Bitcoin's market cap at current prices sits above $1.53 trillion, making it the world's seventh-largest asset by that measure. The asset now trades on regulated exchanges in every major financial center and is held in custody by institutions including Fidelity Digital Assets, Coinbase Custody, and BitGo.
