Bitcoin's Hidden Liquidation Wall Threatens Institutional Conviction

The recent influx of $999 million into US spot Bitcoin ETFs is being touted as a sign of institutional conviction, but a closer look reveals that this may be only half the story.

According to Farside Investors, the four straight outflow days following these inflows pulled about $526 million back out through July 28. Across the broader window from May 29 to July 28, daily totals imply roughly $4.46 billion in net outflows.

BlackRock's IBIT had roughly $60.3 billion in cumulative net inflows as of July 28 and a 30-day median bid-ask spread of 0.03%. Meanwhile, crypto-backed lending reached about $67 billion in the first quarter of 2026, up nearly 50% year over year.

Adam Reeds, the chief executive of Bitcoin lender Ledn, argues that measuring institutional demand now requires looking past any single wrapper and considering a wider menu of Bitcoin risk. He notes that investors can hold Bitcoin as collateral and stay neutral on its near-term price, which reshapes what “institutional adoption” describes.

The limits of a longer maturity are also a concern for Reeds, who warns that the same maturity structure that can make capital look sticky can also make it fragile at specific price levels. He points out that a loan that starts at 50% loan-to-value and liquidates at an 80% threshold would require a 37.5% decline in Bitcoin's price before triggering liquidation, implying a liquidation zone near $39,900.
