Bitcoin's October Rally: A Historical Perspective
The concept of 'Uptober' suggests that October is a particularly bullish month for cryptocurrencies. However, in 2025, this pattern was put to the test when Bitcoin started the month at around $119,000 and initially followed the seasonal narrative, hitting a record high above $126,000.
The strong demand for ETFs supported the move, with U.S. spot Bitcoin funds bringing in about $4.7 billion during the first half of the month. However, this setup broke down due to a fresh U.S.-China trade dispute that sparked a violent risk-off move, including the biggest cryptocurrency liquidation event on record at the time.
In the past seven years, October has consistently been strong for Bitcoin, with an average return of about 19%. This year's performance is different, however. With Bitcoin already gaining around 9% in September and reaching an eight-month high above $87,000, the market has more momentum going into October than it did a few months ago.
The key takeaway from 2025 is that seasonality can support an established trend but cannot counteract a significant macro shock. Therefore, while October 2026 starts off on a bullish note, how long this momentum lasts will be far more important than the term 'Uptober'.
