Bitcoin's Path to Privacy: Researchers Propose New Method
Researchers have proposed a new method to add private transactions to Bitcoin without altering its underlying consensus rules. The team, led by Clara Shikheman, suggests using mixer logic similar to Tornado Cash combined with zero-knowledge proofs to hide sender, receiver, and transaction amount. This approach is seen as a step forward in providing more privacy for Bitcoin users.
Eli Ben-Sasson, founder of Starknet, supports the idea, referencing the original Zerocash paper that led to the creation of Zcash. He believes that adding privacy features could reduce risks for everyday Bitcoin users, such as kidnappings and physical attacks tied to crypto holdings.
However, not everyone is convinced that the method is ready for real-world use. Researcher Robin Linus warns that the cryptography behind the approach remains experimental, and its security assumptions have not been fully tested or proven. He also notes that the method may not hold up against future quantum computing capabilities.
