Bitcoin's Price Stuck by Options Expiry This Friday
Bitcoin's price has been stuck between $85,000 and $88,000 due to heavy options positioning, according to DeFi strategist Penguin X. This isn't random, but a direct result of the market's actions.
The current level of $85,000 holds the most money in the options market, with every 1% drop triggering roughly $142 million in buying, about 1,650 Bitcoin worth, acting like a cushion holding the price up. However, there's a catch: another $58 million is positioned to work against the price if it falls below $85,000, turning that same level from a floor into an accelerant for further downside.
On the upside, two resistance walls are stacked up at $88,000 and $90,000. At $88,000, there's $103 million in seller positioning, while at $90,000, it grows to $123 million. Beyond that, the next major seller doesn't show up until $95,000.
The reason Bitcoin is stuck right now is that major options contracts expire this Friday, September 25, with the biggest concentrations sitting at exactly $85,000 and $90,000. Once that expiry hits, the wall currently holding price near $85,000 disappears, removing the anchor that's been keeping Bitcoin range-bound.
If Bitcoin breaks above $88,000 after expiry, only one significant seller remains at $90,000, opening the door toward $95,000 with little resistance in between. If instead $85,000 breaks first, $84,000 offers weak support before a much larger gap opens below $80,000.
