Bitcoin's Price Surges on Short Squeeze and Institutional Demand
Bitcoin's price surged more than 25% between August 19 and 25, briefly crossing $80,000 for the first time since May. The catalyst was a short squeeze estimated at roughly $4 billion, triggered by the U.S. Treasury Department's decision to double its liquidity-supporting bond buyback operations.
The move caught leveraged bears off guard, with pressure from two directions: government bond market liquidity and sustained ETF demand. Fundstrat analysts characterize the current buying as 'more sustainable' than short-term speculation.
Corporate treasuries are also joining in, with Strive Asset Management acquiring 1,110 BTC worth $87.5 million as part of a new balance sheet strategy. Nasdaq-listed Zhibao Technology purchased 2,380 Bitcoin for $154.7 million via a PIPE financing arrangement.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded their sixth consecutive day of net inflows on Monday, accumulating $2.26 billion over that stretch. Citigroup announced it will launch institutional Bitcoin custody services later this year.
