Bitcoin's Quantum Computing Threat: O'Leary's $1 Million Condition
Kevin O'Leary believes Bitcoin can reach $1 million in value, but there's one major obstacle standing between it and that target. Speaking at the Avalanche Summit in New York, O'Leary stated that resolving doubts about quantum computing breaking the encryption behind the network is essential for Bitcoin to hit seven figures.
'It will if it can resolve the doubt creeping in around quantum computing, you know, breaking the algorithms and the chain and the encryption,' he said. This condition is not just hypothetical, Google has already estimated that breaking Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography could require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits.
The fear of quantum computing threatening Bitcoin's security has already prompted some to take action. In February, O'Leary stated that institutions would not allocate more than 3% of their portfolios to Bitcoin until the issue is resolved. Some have taken an even more cautious approach, with Jefferies strategist Christopher Wood removing a 10% Bitcoin position from his model portfolio over concerns about quantum computing.
