Bitcoin's Safe-Haven Aspirations Halted by Economic Uncertainty
Bitcoin's price behavior is drawing comparisons to gold as a 'safe-haven asset', according to James Butterfill of CoinShares. This similarity is despite macroeconomic signals limiting investor appetite for Bitcoin in this role, says Butterfill. He attributes the recent downturn in value to the ongoing Iran conflict and decreasing confidence in US sovereign debt.
In his note, Butterfill suggests that a resolution to the Iran conflict or further deterioration in confidence in US debt could lead to Bitcoin breaking out of its current resistance at $80,000. However, he remains cautious about inflation expectations, stating that the market's pricing of a September rate hike 'still looks too aggressive'. This is particularly concerning given softer labor data and the divergence within the Fed over how much weight to place on inflation versus employment.
