Bitcoin's Uptober Hopes Hinge on ETF Demand and Macro Conditions
The term 'Uptober' refers to October's historical tendency to be bullish for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. However, in 2025, this trend did not hold true as Bitcoin initially followed the seasonal narrative before breaking down due to a US-China trade dispute.
Despite the disappointment in 2025, history shows that October has been exceptionally strong for Bitcoin over the years. In ten out of thirteen years between 2013 and 2025, Bitcoin ended October higher with an average return of about 19%. This raises questions about whether 'Uptober' will repeat itself in 2026.
The current market backdrop is different from last year's. Bitcoin has already gained approximately 9% in September and recently reached an eight-month high above $87,000 after rising about 25% in August. ETF inflows have increased, and short covering and better liquidity have sped up the transition.
