Bitcoin’s Uptober Hype Faces Reality Check
October, often dubbed Uptober by crypto analysts, is facing skepticism this year as Bitcoin’s historically strong performance in the month falters. Data from Coinglass shows that while Bitcoin rose in 10 of the 13 Octobers from 2013 to 2025, it dropped in 2025 and is currently up just 3% in 2026. The median gain for October over this period was around 15%, but last year it fell about 4%.
The reliability of October as a bullish month is being questioned alongside February, another historically strong month that saw declines in 2025 and 2026. The data suggests that monthly changes have become smaller since 2025, with the average monthly move dropping to 8.4% in 2025, the smallest since 2013, before increasing to 11.3% this year.
Analysts had hoped that September’s unexpected 6% rise in Bitcoin could signal stronger rally momentum, reinforcing the Uptober narrative. However, historically, September only saw positive returns four times between 2013 and 2024, with a median price change of around a 4% drop. The strongest months, October, February, November, and July, underperformed their historic medians in 2025 and 2026, while weaker months like August, September, and December performed better, even if they remained in the red.
The article warns against relying too heavily on seasonal patterns, noting that averages can be misleading. For example, November’s average 41% jump is skewed by a 450% rally in 2013. Without that outlier, the average drops to about 7%, while the median is around 9%. The data suggests that investors should be cautious about blindly trusting monthly hypes, as seasonal patterns are not guaranteed to repeat.
