Bitcoin's 'Uptober' Momentum Faces Crucial Test as Altcoins Surge
The concept of 'Uptober' refers to the seasonality pattern in cryptocurrency that suggests October is generally bullish. However, the 2025 market showed that this pattern can be broken. Bitcoin started October at around $119,000 and initially followed the seasonal narrative, hitting a record above $126,000. The strong demand for ETFs supported this move, with U.S. spot Bitcoin funds bringing in about $4.7 billion during the first half of the month.
However, the setup then broke down due to a fresh U.S.-China trade dispute, leading to a violent risk-off move and the biggest cryptocurrency liquidation event on record at the time. As a result, Bitcoin fell towards $105,000 and ended October down about 4%. In contrast, broader altcoin benchmarks fared much worse, with Ethereum losing roughly 6% to 7%.
Despite this setback, historical data suggests that October has continued to be exceptionally strong for Bitcoin. In ten out of the thirteen years between 2013 and 2025, Bitcoin ended October higher, with an average return of about 19%. As we enter October 2026, Bitcoin has already gained roughly 9% in September and recently reached an eight-month high above $87,000.
Altcoins such as Solana, XRP, NEAR, LINK, and Zcash have also seen significant gains in September, while Ethereum has broken higher following its August rally. This creates both opportunity and risk for the market, with a continuation towards higher levels possible if ETF demand remains positive and macro conditions do not deteriorate.
