Bitcoin's Volatile Rally at $87K Driven by Institutional Demand
Bitcoin's surge to $87,000 has garnered significant attention from institutional investors, according to Nigel Green, CEO of Devere. However, this influx of capital has also coincided with approximately $1 billion in liquidations. As a result, the rally can be seen as both a testament to institutional demand and a volatile reflection of leveraged positions.
Despite the volatility, blockchain settlement infrastructure continues to expand. Hana Bank recently utilized blockchain technology to transfer $100 million, reducing the usual five-day wait time. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank launched Pontes, a platform for central-bank settlement of tokenized assets. However, Saudi Arabia's reported exit from the mBridge project suggests diverging national strategies and potential fragmentation in cross-border CBDC infrastructure.
Regulatory developments are also worth noting. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has stated that the failure of the CLARITY Act could benefit his company. In a separate move, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is tightening e-wallet and QR rules following the discovery of illegal casinos posing as bakeries and salons.
