Bitfinex Identifies Key Catalysts as Bitcoin Faces Rate Hike Headwinds
Bitcoin traders face a challenging month ahead, with economic data potentially shifting rate expectations and higher Treasury returns competing with cryptocurrency holdings, according to a recent macro outlook by Bitfinex. The exchange identified 17 key macro catalysts that could impact Bitcoin in October, including inflation and spending releases and the Federal Reserve's rate announcement.
The Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates has increased the attractiveness of traditional investments, making it harder for Bitcoin to compete. Bitfinex noted that the 10-year real yield is currently at 2.90%, and holding above 2.80% through the Fed decision would support its thesis. If the yield falls below 2.50%, it would remove pressure on Bitcoin, but above 3.25%, the exchange sees disorderly conditions in longer-term debt markets.
Bitfinex's analysis also highlights the importance of spot demand, or purchases of Bitcoin itself, to sustain gains. The exchange pointed to the $2.5 billion in net U.S. spot ETF inflows in September as a contributing factor to the approximately 6% advance in Bitcoin prices. However, it remains to be seen whether purchases will remain strong enough to offset higher inflation-adjusted returns on government debt.
