Bitfinex Price Glitch Sends Bitcoin Futures Soaring to $155,000
A brief but intense price surge on Bitfinex sent the Bitcoin (BTC) perpetual futures contract soaring to nearly $155,000 before rapidly returning to its usual market value of around $85,000.
The anomaly was caused by a liquidity shortage on the exchange and was not reflective of any underlying changes in the broader market trend. The BFX composite spot price index remained stable during the incident, confirming that the movement was isolated to the futures contract.
Investigation suggests that a massive cascade of forced liquidations may have triggered the price spike. Over the past 24 hours, over 117,000 traders had their leveraged positions liquidated across the market, totaling $688 million. The majority of losses came from short positions, with Bitcoin alone seeing $354.93 million in liquidations.
The incident highlights the risks of using high leverage in the cryptocurrency derivatives market and the importance of managing trading positions effectively.
