Bitforex Founder Garrett Jin Boosts Bitcoin Long Position Amid Price Rally
Garrett Jin, the founder of the defunct cryptocurrency exchange Bitforex, has significantly increased his Bitcoin long position. According to on-chain analytics firm EmberCN, he added 600 BTC at approximately $79,000 after Bitcoin's brief dip below $80,000. This move brings his total leveraged long position to 1,868 BTC, valued at around $147 million, with an average entry price of $77,090.
This addition comes after a volatile stretch for Jin's trading book, which faced an unrealized loss of up to $23 million in early July as Bitcoin traded below his average entry. However, the recent surge in Bitcoin's price has turned the position into profit, with an unrealized gain of approximately $2.78 million at current levels.
Jin's Bitcoin position is a 3x leveraged cross long, which reflects a high-risk strategy that amplifies both gains and losses. He also holds a 2x leveraged cross short on Zcash (ZEC), with 32,760 ZEC at an average entry of $444, currently showing an unrealized loss of approximately $10.74 million.
This development highlights the outsized risk carried by leveraged positions, particularly for high-profile figures in the crypto space. It also demonstrates how quickly market sentiment can shift, turning deep losses into profits. For retail traders, it serves as a reminder of the volatility inherent in cryptocurrency markets and the importance of risk management.
