Bitget Hack Linked to DPRK Threat Actors, $387M Stolen
Chainalysis has linked the recent $387 million Bitget hack to threat actors tied to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). This alarming attribution highlights ongoing security risks in the cryptocurrency space, particularly as the stolen funds have been tracked across multiple blockchain networks. The hack saw the rapid movement of funds across four major networks, Ethereum, XRP, Zcash, and Tron, within the first few hours, with Ethereum accounting for 49.7% of the transactions and XRP making up 40.8%. The movement of stolen funds raises concerns about the effectiveness of current security protocols in the crypto ecosystem.
The investigation by Chainalysis, a leading blockchain analysis firm, found that tens of millions of dollars in stolen XRP were funneled into Bitcoin through cross-chain liquidity protocols over the next day and a half. This sophisticated operation has prompted concerns about the vulnerability of exchanges and the need for enhanced security measures in the crypto industry. The total DPRK-linked crypto thefts in 2026 exceeding $1 billion could influence market sentiment, causing further caution among investors.
