BitGo Ditches LayerZero for Chainlink's CCIP Amid Security Concerns
BitGo has announced that it will replace LayerZero with Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) as the exclusive cross-chain standard for Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC). The company cited security concerns following a $292 million KelpDAO exploit earlier this year, which highlighted vulnerabilities in LayerZero's configurable security model. BitGo CEO Mike Belshe stated that Chainlink CCIP 'gives us a proven, institutionally adopted interoperability standard' that aligns with the controls and risk management expected from BitGo.
The move is part of a broader industry trend, with several projects already announcing migrations to Chainlink. These include Mantle, Kelp, Lombard, Solv Protocol, Virtuals, Re, and Kraken, which together cover around $7.24 billion in assets. Adding WBTC's $7.4 billion market capitalization pushes the total of announced LayerZero-to-Chainlink migrations to roughly $14.6 billion.
WBTC is a tokenized version of Bitcoin that operates as an ERC-20 token, allowing it to be used in decentralized finance applications on other blockchains for trading, lending, and collateral. BitGo retains full ownership of the WBTC contract under the Chainlink arrangement, with the ability to set its own parameters for cross-chain transfer limits and access controls.
