BitMart Joins BitMEX in Ceasing Operations Amid Crypto Exchange Consolidation
Crypto exchange BitMart announced on July 26 that it will shut down its trading platform after nine years, following in the footsteps of derivatives platform BitMEX, which also ceased operations. The decision was attributed to 'operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction,' but no specific reason was given.
BitMart's native BMX token plummeted 66% within 24 hours of the announcement, dropping from $0.30 to $0.056 and reducing its market capitalization to approximately $19.7 million. The exchange will stop accepting new registrations, deposits, and trading orders at 01:30 UTC on Sunday and will formally cease operations on January 31, 2027.
CryptoQuant analysts described the closures as part of a broader consolidation trend in the exchange sector, where smaller platforms face increasing pressure from regulatory requirements, higher compliance costs, and competition from institutional-grade venues. They pointed to Binance's exchange reserves as an indication that liquidity is concentrating among larger platforms.
