BitMEX Closure Won't Mirror FTX Collapse, Market Sees Consolidation

Share

BitMEX, one of the pioneering exchanges in the crypto derivatives market, has announced its closure after 11 years. The news comes as a surprise to many, but experts say it's unlikely to have a similar impact on the markets as FTX's collapse last year.

The main difference between BitMEX and FTX is that BitMEX has assured its holders that its assets exceed liabilities, unlike FTX which had been misappropriating customer funds. Additionally, BitMEX was unable to find a buyer due to complications around its $270 million insurance fund.

XWIN Japan notes that the closures of BitMEX and BitMart mark a significant shift in the crypto landscape towards consolidation. As smaller exchanges struggle to compete with larger ones, stricter regulations and increasing institutional participation are making it difficult for them to survive.
