BitMEX Shuts Down After 11-Year Run Amid Regulatory Challenges

Share

BitMEX, the pioneering cryptocurrency derivatives trading platform, is shutting down after an 11-year run. The exchange announced that it will cease all operations on September 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC. New account registrations have already been halted, and no new positions will be allowed after August 26.

At its peak in 2018-2019, BitMEX commanded over 50% of the entire cryptocurrency derivatives market, with daily transaction volumes reaching $8 billion and annual trading volume exceeding $1 trillion. The exchange's perpetual swap contract, which allowed traders to hold leveraged positions indefinitely without expiry dates, became a widely copied product in the industry.

The closure is attributed to a 'strategic review of business and market conditions' by BitMEX's parent company, HDR Global Trading. The announcement assured users that their assets remain secured and under user control, but warned that withdrawal fees may apply to those who delay. The shutdown marks the end of an era for BitMEX, which played a significant role in shaping the cryptocurrency derivatives trading landscape.
