BitMEX Shuts Down as Perpetual Swaps Spread Across Crypto Market

BitMEX is shutting down on September 23, 2026, after eight years of operation. The exchange was founded by Arthur Hayes and became a pioneer in crypto derivatives with its perpetual swap product.

The perpetual swap, introduced in May 2016 as XBTUSD, allowed traders to take long or short positions without worrying about expiration dates. It combined continuous trading, crypto collateral, a central limit order book, and high leverage, making it a game-changer for the industry.

BitMEX's closure is not a failure of perpetual swaps but rather a sign that they have become a standard in the crypto market. The exchange is disappearing as regulated US venues, decentralized exchanges, and traditional assets begin to adopt the product.
