BitMEX to Shut Down Permanently on September 23, 2026
BitMEX, a pioneering cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, announced it will shut down permanently on September 23, 2026, after an 11-year run. The platform's board of directors made the decision following a strategic review of the business and industry trends.
The shutdown process has already begun, with new account registrations halted immediately and users urged to close open positions and withdraw funds as soon as possible. On August 26, BitMEX will shift to a reduce-only mode, allowing only the reduction of existing positions and not the opening of new ones. Any remaining positions on September 23 will be closed immediately.
The exchange's influence on the industry cannot be overstated. It invented the perpetual swap contract, which has become a standard in crypto derivatives trading. At its peak, BitMEX handled over $1 trillion in annual trading volume and captured roughly 57% of the global crypto derivatives market share. However, the platform's trading volume has declined significantly, and it now lists only 58 coins and 99 contracts.
BitMEX's closure is largely due to regulatory penalties totaling $200 million, a failed sale process, and a recent management exodus. The exchange had been under scrutiny for violating anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer programs, leading to a series of fines and penalties.
