Bitmine Grabs Nearly 5% of Ethereum's Supply Through Aggressive Staking Strategy
Bitmine Immersion Technologies has become one of the largest holders of Ethereum, with nearly 5% of all ETH in existence. The company's treasury strategy involves buying and staking Ethereum to earn rewards, rather than simply holding it as an investment.
The staking business is the key aspect of Bitmine's strategy, with over 4.9 million of its ETH being staked through its Made in America Validator Network (MAVAN). This allows Bitmine to generate revenue from staking income, which has been estimated at $290 million per year.
The company's chairman, Tom Lee, has stated that the goal is to reach 5% ownership of Ethereum's supply, but may slow down the pace of accumulation once this target is reached. Lee has also emphasized the importance of decentralization in the Ethereum network and has said that Bitmine should not try to push concentration beyond 5%.
Bitmine's staking operations are tied to Ethereum Tower through long-term arrangements, including a 10-year management services agreement and an economic interest in the validator platform. This adds operational risk to the company's business model, as it is dependent on the performance of MAVAN and the Ethereum network.
