BitMine Outperforms Ethereum in Bear Market With Aggressive Buyback Strategy

BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR.US) demonstrated strong resilience in the first nine months of 2026, with its stock price declining by only 3% compared to Ethereum's (ETH) 10% drop. This performance gap of 731 basis points was attributed to BitMine's aggressive capital management, particularly its large-scale share buyback program. Chairman Tom Lee highlighted that the company repurchased 21 million shares in 2026, directly bolstering its stock performance. Additionally, BitMine continued to increase its ETH holdings, adding 15,112 coins during the week ending October 4, bringing its total to approximately 6.02 million tokens, or 4.9% of Ethereum's total supply.

The company's strategy of combining share buybacks with increased asset holdings is not unique, but BitMine's scale effect is more pronounced. For example, Strategy (MSTR.US) saw a 0.8% stock price increase despite Bitcoin's (BTC) decline, while Forward Industries' stock surged 18% against a falling Solana (SOL) price. SharpLink (SBET.US), another Ethereum-focused asset manager, posted a 3.8% gain, outperforming BitMine. These trends suggest that hedging token price volatility through balance sheet maneuvers has become a consensus strategy among leading institutions.

However, BitMine faces significant financial pressure. As of October 6, the company's Ethereum holdings were facing unrealized losses of up to $3.6 billion, the largest loss in its asset management history. With Ethereum trading at $2,703.67, down 1.07% over the past 24 hours, and roughly 45% below its peak of $4,946.05 on August 24, 2025, BitMine's average cost basis for its Ethereum holdings is around $3,300 per coin. Even with Citi's forecast of Ethereum reaching $3,028 in 12 months, BitMine's portfolio will remain in the red in the short term.

Looking ahead, BitMine's strategic focus remains on closing the allocation gap to reach its target asset allocation of 5%. The company is still short by roughly 88,600 Ethereum to meet this milestone. Investors should closely monitor BitMine's latest updates on the X platform and its YouTube channel for future course of action. The fourth quarter will be a critical test, determining whether Tom Lee's forecast of 'the strongest bull cycle in history' can materialize and whether BitMine's relative advantage can endure over a longer time horizon.
