Tom Lee-backed Bitmine has reached its goal of holding 5% of all Ethereum in circulation, surpassing expectations by reaching this target years ahead of schedule.

The company's Chairman, Tom Lee, explained on the Coinage podcast that Bitmine had set out to own 5% of ETH because it was a quantity large enough 'to have a positive influence on the Ethereum ecosystem', funded in part by staking yields.

Lee stated that the company had expected it to take five years to reach this target, but they are now only 1.2 years into it and expect to soon reach 5%.

Lee hinted at a new long-term goal but declined to disclose specifics, saying only that the objectives would not change and that the next goals would balance Ethereum ecosystem support and shareholder value.
