BitMine Stands on Brink of Reaching 5% ETH Ownership Threshold
BitMine Immersion Technologies (NASDAQ:BMNR) is on the cusp of reaching its ambitious target of owning 5% of Ethereum's supply, prompting questions about what happens to ETH demand once it reaches this milestone. The company has accumulated 5.81 million ETH worth nearly $11 billion at current prices, representing roughly 4.8% of Ethereum's circulating supply.
BitMine began as a Bitcoin mining company before pivoting toward an Ethereum treasury strategy under the guidance of Fundstrat co-founder and BitMine chairman Tom Lee. According to Lee, this strategy is the 'Alchemy of 5%', effectively positioning BitMine as one of Ethereum's largest institutional stakeholders.
The company has staked over 5 million ETH, worth around $9.8 billion, through its staking operations. At an estimated staking yield of 2.63%, BitMine has projected annualized staking revenue of approximately $257 million, giving the company an additional source of returns while potentially allowing its ETH holdings to increase through staking rewards.
Once BitMine reaches its target, there are three possible scenarios: nothing changes and it continues buying; purchases taper off as management focuses on managing its enormous balance sheet and maximizing staking returns; or it stops buying ETH altogether. While the disappearance of one of Ethereum's largest corporate buyers could weigh on short-term sentiment, BitMine can put its Ethereum to work through staking.
