BitMine Suffers $1.1 Billion Loss Amid Ethereum Treasury Discount
BitMine's shares plummeted by 7.1% on August 28, wiping out approximately $1.10 billion in equity value. The company's stock closed at $23.80, down from its previous high of $24.20.
The drop in BitMine's share price is significant because the company primarily acts as an Ethereum treasury, with a substantial portion of its assets tied to the cryptocurrency. As of August 23, BitMine held around 5.85 million ETH, worth approximately $14.26 billion based on the current market price.
The company's staking platform, which accounts for 87% of its total assets, is expected to generate around $330 million in annualized revenue. However, this revenue may not be enough to offset the holding expenses and daily fluctuations in ether prices, which can surpass an entire year's worth of staking returns.
The estimated discount on BitMine's treasury value stands at around 3.2%, although this calculation does not account for liabilities, taxes, custody fees, or potential dilution. Analysts note that the company's valuation is largely dependent on its Ethereum holdings and staking performance, making it essential to assess whether these metrics warrant a higher valuation.
