BitMine's Ethereum Frenzy: Is This Proxy Stock Worth the Risk?
BitMine Immersion Technologies (NYSE: BMNR) has become the largest Ethereum treasury company in the world, owning a significant portion of all ETH in circulation. After buying massive amounts of Ethereum over the past 30 days, BitMine now holds 4.88% of all Ethereum in circulation and plans to reach 5% by year's end.
The market cap of BitMine is nearly identical to the value of its total Ethereum holdings, standing at $14.5 billion and $14.4 billion respectively. This has led some investors to consider BitMine as a proxy stock for exposure to Ethereum without directly buying ETH.
However, Dominic Basulto from The Motley Fool argues that there's no significant payoff for investors in holding BitMine, citing its 54% decline over the past year due to Ethereum's own price drop. He also points out that digital asset treasury companies like BitMine can only generate value if the underlying cryptocurrency performs well.
Basulto suggests that investors may be better off buying Ethereum directly or through spot ETFs, which offer low-cost exposure and don't require holding a proxy stock. The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team also didn't include BitMine in their list of top 10 stocks for investment.
