BitMine's Ethereum Stake Reaches Nearly 12%, but Who Controls It?
BitMine Immersion Technologies has amassed a significant stake in Ethereum's proof-of-stake system, equivalent to nearly 12% of the network's active stake. As of September 7, BitMine held 5.07 million ETH staked, which represents about 85% of its total holdings of 5.93 million ETH. This translates to approximately $12.6 billion at current prices.
BitMine's economic influence on the network is substantial, but its control over the validators behind this stake remains unclear. The company has not disclosed how its assets are distributed among validator operators or who controls the signing keys used for block proposals and attestations. A September 8 operational update from BitMine mentioned that a portion of its ETH was already staked through MAVAN, its institutional staking platform.
As BitMine approaches its goal of owning 5% of Ethereum's total supply, it is directing most of its holdings towards staking. However, the distinction between economic influence and control over validators becomes increasingly important as the company continues to grow its stake in the network.
