BitRiver Founder Jailed Amid $13M Crypto Fraud Case Escalation
Russia's cryptocurrency mining industry is under renewed scrutiny after authorities escalated legal proceedings against Igor Runets, founder of BitRiver, one of the country's largest digital asset mining companies. A Moscow court ordered Runets to be transferred from house arrest to pretrial detention following prosecutors' introduction of additional allegations involving large-scale fraud linked to a mining equipment contract valued at nearly 1 billion rubles ($13 million).
The case has expanded over several months, with investigators alleging that BitRiver's founder entered into a commercial agreement in 2023 to supply industrial cryptocurrency mining equipment worth more than $8 million. However, the buyer reportedly transferred an advance payment under the agreement, but the promised mining equipment was never delivered.
Prosecutors argue that the seriousness of the allegations and financial damage involved justify pretrial detention, which would reduce the possibility of witness intimidation or interference with the ongoing investigation.
