BlackRock Bitcoin Trust Surpasses Top S&P 500 ETFs Since Launch
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust has been beating top S&P 500 ETFs since its launch in January 2024. According to Eric Balchunas, senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg, the cumulative percentage return of BlackRock's product is only slightly ahead of Vanguard's popular S&P 500 fund. The iShares Bitcoin Trust, with ticker IBIT, has risen by 71% since its inception, while Vanguard's S&P 500 ETF, with ticker VOO, has seen a 66% increase on a total-return basis.
iShares Bitcoin Trust's path to returns looks like 'the El Toro roller coaster' according to Balchunas, who compared it to the walk-in-the-park-like performance of Vanguard's S&P 500 ETF. BlackRock's product is currently managing $61.4 billion in assets and remains the most successful bitcoin ETF on the market.
The iShares Bitcoin Trust allows more traditional investors to get exposure to bitcoin, making it a significant player in the crypto space. Investors have been piling back into ETFs in August, which has also contributed to the increase in bitcoin's price. The biggest cryptocurrency recently reached as high as $81,281 before sliding again on Friday.
