BlackRock Crypto ETFs Reversal: $3.5 Billion Net Decrease

BlackRock's spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs have experienced a significant reversal in the second quarter, with a combined net decrease of $3.5 billion from capital-share transactions. This marks a stark contrast to last year's creation boom, which saw a $13.9 billion increase.

The filings for the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) and iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA) show that IBIT recorded $4.3 billion of contributions for shares issued and $7.2 billion of distributions for shares redeemed during the three months ended June 30, resulting in a net decrease of $2.9 billion.

ETHA also saw a significant decline, with $943.3 million in contributions and $1.5 billion in distributions, leading to a $583.4 million decrease. The combined activity tables show that 106,148 BTC and 770,839 ETH were sold for share redemptions, valued at $3.85 billion of Bitcoin and $904 million of Ethereum.

While recent August sessions have seen some inflows into the funds, with IBIT capturing $478.5 million in inflows and ETHA drawing $83.8 million across three days, it would take about 19 trading sessions for BlackRock funds to accumulate a similar amount if this trend continues.
