Blast Ethereum Layer 2 Network Shuts Down Amid Economic Challenges
The Ethereum layer 2 network, Blast, is shutting down due to economic challenges. The team behind Blast stated that running the network costs more than it earns, making it economically unsustainable. Blast was founded by Tieshun Roquerre, known as Pacman, and initially attracted over $2 billion in deposits before its mainnet launch in February 2024. However, the network now holds only around $65 million in total value locked, and the BLAST token's market capitalization has fallen to about $30 million, roughly 98% below its June 2024 all-time high.
The team emphasized that getting user funds safely back onto Ethereum is their top priority. Users have until October 26 to complete a crypto asset withdrawal using Blast's normal interface. After this deadline, holders will need to interact directly with Blast's bridge contracts on Ethereum to recover their assets. The shutdown is a stark reminder that early deposit totals do not guarantee staying power, and that the economics of running a chain must work long after the initial hype fades.
