Blast Ethereum Layer 2 Network Shuts Down Amid Financial Woes
Blast, an Ethereum layer 2 network, is shutting down due to operating costs exceeding revenue. The network, launched under Tieshun Roquerre, or Pacman, creator of Blur, has seen a significant decline in activity. According to DeFiLlama data, revenue plummeted from $3.5 million in June 2024 to $1,793 in the latest reported month.
Users have until October 26 to withdraw their assets through Blast's interface, with an estimated $63.5 million remaining bridged. The shutdown leaves the future of the BLAST token uncertain, with no clear instructions on refunds or a future distribution. The network's TVL peaked at over $2 billion in June 2024, but has since fallen to around $32 million, according to CoinDesk.
The shutdown's impact on the BLAST token was immediate, with prices falling 19% after the announcement. The token is currently around 98% below its launch price. The exact date of the network's complete shutdown remains unclear, as does the fate of its native token.
